Janine Barchas

professor UT Austin; creator What Jane Saw

Janine Barchas is Professor of English at the University of Texas, where she teaches Austen in Austin.  She is the author of, among other scholarly books, Matters of Fact in Jane Austen: History, Location, and Celebrity and also writes for popular audiences—from guest blog spots to The New York Times.  Her favorite challenge is teaching Austen to freshmen engineers.

She is the creator behind the digital heritage project “What Jane Saw” (www.whatjanesaw.org) which reconstructs two Georgian art museums witnessed by Jane Austen in 1796 and 1813.  The latest iteration of this digital project is a VR module designed by the Texas Advanced Computing Center’s holodeck, or Visualization Lab.

Most recently, she has co-curated the exhibition “Will & Jane: Shakespeare, Austen, and the Cult of Celebrity,” currently at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington DC through November 6 (http://www.folger.edu/exhibitions/will-and-jane) .  The exhibition tells the story of the parallel afterlives of Jane Austen and William Shakespeare and asks why and how these two English writers have risen to the status of literary superheroes.
